First Floor Extension in Lambeth a balance between Sustainability and Style

This contemporary first-floor extension, in South London, is conceived as a light-filled retreat, blending modern architecture with sustainable design. Wrapped in slatted timber cladding sourced from FSC-certified, sustainably managed forests, the façade showcases renewable materials while reducing embodied carbon. Each timber slat is treated for durability and low maintenance, ensuring the exterior ages beautifully and maintains a low environmental impact.

Natural Light and Panoramic Views

Inside, two large skylights flood the space with natural daylight, creating the feeling of a room open to the sky. A south-facing full-height window with vertical timber louvres filters harsh sunlight, providing passive cooling in summer and enhancing privacy without sacrificing views. To the west, a slim panoramic strip window frames woodland scenery, while an east-facing high-level window captures the hillside profile, turning the surrounding landscape into living art.

Flexible Interior Layout

At the heart of the extension lies a central volume containing a discreet toilet and a luxurious shower–steam room. Around this core, sliding panels create a flexible floor plan, allowing the interior to transform into three distinct zones: a bedroom suite, a private en-suite bathroom, and a relaxing lounge area. This adaptable layout supports modern lifestyles, offering both privacy and open-plan living when needed.

Green Roof and Eco-Friendly Architecture

A biodiverse green roof provides additional insulation, supports native wildlife, and strengthens the project’s eco-credentials. Together with passive solar strategies and responsibly sourced materials, the design achieves a perfect balance of energy efficiency and architectural beauty.
